PRESERVING STABILITY

  • Along the distribution lines, power outlet voltage slowly decreases.

  • Utilities try to keep voltage low at beginning of line to reduce consumption from water tanks.

  • At end of line, a minimum voltage must be preserved.

THE GRID AT RISK

  • When adding electric vehicles and solar PV, grid voltage becomes unstable and causes some DER to disconnect, increasing the problem

  • Up to now, classic solar inverters were acceptable as urban DER penetration was still low

  • Nowadays, with higher DER penetration, new technologies of stability, voltage control and communications are now required
